v & i went to LA Flash at LACMA on Saturday, and I wrote a review of it for Writing 340.
here are my first two paragraphs:
On Saturday, September 6, 2008, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosted LA Flash, a single night celebration of Los Angeles street style in the 70s and today. Thirty-five years ago, in 1973, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—hereafter known as LACMA—commissioned five photographers to document LA street style, and combine their findings to create the original LA Flash, “a lifesize 400-slide report on the fashion show that Los Angeles is” (from the 1973 program). Those very slides were dusted off and displayed on various surfaces—permanent and temporary—in LACMA’s Central Court for three hours last Saturday night.
The event, promoted on LACMA’s website as “one of the social and photographic highlights of the season”, attracted an eclectic group of Angelenos, each eager to showcase his or her own personal street style. Photographers from the LA Times, WireImage, and Jessica Miller Photography diligently captured the (surprisingly varied) sea of plaid button-ups, high-waisted skirts and Converse high tops. With so many of the fashion-conscious in such close proximity, LA Flash was not just the place to see and be seen; it was the place to judge and be judged.
