Summer Movie Reviews

This is the first post in a new series we're doing of film and tv reviews! We want to make sure the blog is well rounded.
I'm starting it off by reviewing two of the best movies I've seen in quite a while, Wall-E and Iron Man.

Wall-E, a Pixar animated movie, is essentially a story about two robots who fall in love. It just might be the cutest movie I've ever seen, and the visuals are astounding. The first 30 minutes of the movie are almost silent, with only robot sounds here and there. Surprisingly, that was probably the best part of the movie. It was smart, really funny, and the animation was incredible. Plus, it had a pro-environment/anti-consumerism message (and everyone knows how hip going green is!). It basically said that unless we clean up our acts, we're going to overrun the planet with so much waste that it'll become uninhabitable and we'll all turn into robot blobs. SO TRUE.
Aside from that, the two main characters are lovable and well developed, a remarkable feat considering they really only say each others' names the whole movie. And who can resist robots falling in love, really?
Overall, I'd give it 5 stars. I walked out of the theater with a huge smile on my face, as did everyone else leaving the theater.

Iron Man, I must admit, blew me away. I had heard it was good, but I figured it was just another comic book movie. From the opening sequence, however, I knew I was wrong. Robert Downey, Jr. plays Tony Stark, the head of a weapons manufacturing company who realizes that his weapons are doing more evil than good, and tries to change his company's mission. The first few minutes of the movie are just him talking to soldiers in a tank, but I was immediately enthralled. He is hilarious. And so cute! (Although I should admit that I have had the biggest crush on him since I was in 8th grade, when he was on Ally McBeal. We've weathered a lot together!)
Basically, I thought the movie way exceeded my expectations (I'm not a big war movie fan, and much of the film takes place in the Middle East). It was very engaging, and when it ended I just wanted to keep watching it! I can't wait for the sequel. Plus, he's shirtless a lot.
I give it 4 stars, because I loved it even though I hate most comic book movies. But only 4, because without RDJ the film wouldn't have been nearly as good.

Next on my list is The Wackness. It's the story of a teenage boy in 1994 New York City who deals pot to his therapist. Josh Peck (from Drake and Josh), Olivia Thirlby ("honest to blog," from Juno) and Ben Kingsley star. AND Mary-Kate Olsen is in it! And a lot of hip hop! What could be better.
